Occupational Therapy

Life altering conditions may significantly impact a person's ability to perform simple daily tasks such as dressing, bathing or preparing a meal. Occupational therapists work with individuals to devise a comprehensive treatment program to help them regain their independence in daily tasks as well as home management, leisure and community activities. At the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, the outpatient occupational therapy department offers a number of specialized services aiming to help individuals return to their life roles and improve their quality of life at home and in the community.

Our highly skilled staff uses skilled observation and standardized testing in collaboration with individual and caregiver goals to identify areas for improvement. Treatments are directed toward developing, improving, or restoring daily living skills, home management, work readiness, leisure activities, or enhancing educational performance skills. These services may require adapting the environment or training the use of assistive devices and orthotics (splints) to improve functional performance. Attention is also given to the improvement and restoration of sensorimotor, neuromuscular functioning, visual and cognitive-perceptual components of performance.

All occupational therapists are trained as experts in their individual program areas and receive advanced certifications when appropriate and available.
