This program addresses the frequent barriers in everyday environments that can hinder a person's ability to function independently. Examples may be stairs that are no longer negotiable, a bathtub that has become difficult to get in and out of or limited space that does not allow freedom of movement from a wheelchair. The focus is to recommend individualized design solutions for safe and accessible home environments through structural design and specialized equipment that enhance abilities while meeting environmental and architectural needs. All recommendations are made by an occupational therapist with knowledge of and expertise in rehabilitation, design and local/national building codes. Based on patient and family needs, recommendations may include:
- Accessible designs for bathrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, bedrooms, and living rooms
- Ramping (custom, portable and modular)
- Wheelchair lifts/elevators
- Stair lifts (chair glides)
- Lifting devices (ceiling track/portable systems)
Once a comprehensive functional evaluation and in-home environmental assessment is completed, the occupational therapist may provide a detailed report of recommendations including guidelines for construction, scale drawings and obtaining specialized equipment and products.
