Steven R. Flanagan, MD (Chair)
Professor & Chair, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine
Member of NYU Langone Medical Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
“At Rusk, we provide seamless rehabilitation care, starting at any point of entry and continuing for as long as necessary. We can treat you as an inpatient, then bring you back as an outpatient as needed. It’s one-stop shopping: You don’t have to look anywhere else. In this complicated healthcare world, that’s a great advantage—especially with a disability resulting from a brain injury that can cause symptoms of confusion and forgetfulness, making it difficult to manage the healthcare system. We’ll guide you through that. Whether your disability is short-lived or lifelong, our philosophy is that your rehab needs are going to be met here, and you can stop worrying.”

About Dr. Flanagan
As chair of the Department of Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Flanagan divides his time between his physiatry practice, providing rehabilitation treatment for patients affected by traumatic brain injury, stroke, spasticity and other central nervous system conditions, and his responsibilities leading the medical and therapeutic services of the Rusk Institute as a whole. In both areas, his work is guided by his extensive experience as a leading expert in the rehabilitation of people with brain-injured—a field that requires a carefully tailored approach using many different types of treatment.
“At Rusk,” says Dr. Flanagan, “we treat the full range of problems associated with brain injury—physical issues such as difficulty walking and performing the normal activities of daily life, behavioral problems that may arise from traumatic brain injury, depression, irritability, sleep disorders, and cognitive difficulties such as problems with attention and memory.” After evaluating each patient, Dr. Flanagan works with a team of therapists to implement the treatment plan. Depending on the patient’s needs, this team may include a neuropsychologist, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, a swallow therapist, and a psychologist. “Vocational therapy is also a very big part of our approach,” notes Dr. Flanagan, “and our vocational program is among the best in the world.”
In addition to his work at Rusk, Dr. Flanagan is medical director of the brain injury rehabilitation program at Park Terrace Care Center, a comprehensive rehabilitation facility in Rego Park, New York. He has given numerous presentations on rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury and stroke, both nationally and internationally, and has conducted research on various aspects of brain injury, including emotional control, fatigue and sleep disorders, and on the use of electrical stimulation to aid stroke recovery. He currently serves on the medical advisory boards of the Brain Trauma Foundation and the Indian Head Injury Foundation, and was recently elected chair of the Central Nervous System Council of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Flanagan was rated one of the “Best Doctors” in the New York metropolitan area by New York magazine in 2009 and 2010, and by Castle Connolly from 2006 through 2009, and was also named to Castle Connolly’s list of “Best Doctors in America” in 2010.
